The Eucharist
The Eucharist is at the heart of our common life as God’s people. It is the celebration of the very deepest mystery of God’s love, in sending Jesus Christ to be born as one of us, to surrender himself to death on the cross for the sins of the whole world, and to rise from the grave to set us free from slavery to death. This is the act of worship which Jesus commanded his followers to make. In it, we attend to the wisdom of God proclaimed from the Scriptures and hear the story of his saving love demonstrated through history. In it, we go to God in prayer with the needs of the world and all its people on our hearts. In it, with bread and wine, we make the memorial of Christ’s death and resurrection. In it, we are fed with the Body and Blood of Christ and are joined with him and with one another in communion. And from it, we go out with Christ’s grace and blessing to live his risen life in the world.
The 1st Sunday of the month is our Family Eucharist. On other Sundays, Children’s Church and creche facilities are available. Baptisms usually take place at 12.15 pm after the 10.00 am service on the 2nd Sunday of the month.
Daily Prayer is based upon the Common Worship Daily Office.
On all the Sundays of Lent, Evening Prayer is followed by the devotion known as the Stations of the Cross.
* Sunday evening services vary on a rotating basis. Generally on the last Sunday of the month we hold ‘A Gathering of Prayers’. Based on Compline this is a quiet service where we offer up the prayers of visitors to St John’s who leave their prayer requests as notes on a Lectern at the back of church. In addition we have a Wholeness and Healing service and Evening Prayer with Benediction alternating every six weeks.
Our Service Sheet, always available at the back of church, lists all of the weeks planned services and activities.
